Domestic sewage treatment plants have been in the UK for around 25 years.
There are used in areas where there is no mains drainage. In short, they convert raw sewage effluent into a purer state. 99% purer in most cases. This means that the sewage effluent from your sewage treatment plant can legally be discharged into lakes, rivers, soil and streams.
How the sewage treatment plant works.
All household waste from the sinks, bath, showers and toilets leave the property and enter into the sewage treatment plant.
A sewage treatment plant is usually split into 3 compartments.
1) The first compartment is where all the sewage waste enters. It is called the main holding tank.
From this first compartment all the liquid slowly drains off into the second compartment.
The heavy particles and solids remain in this first compartment.
Because of this, the sewage treatment will need desludging at frequent intervals.
2) The second compartment of the sewage treatment plant, is the heart of the machine.
It is here that all the micro biological organisms live. Over time they break down the sewage effluent. From here the sewage effluent is discharged into the third compartment.
3) The third compartment is where the liquid waste is discharged from the sewage treatment plant into the soakaway, or some other discharge point such as a water course e.t.c
There basic function is like that of a septic tank, except their discharge of sewage effluent is a lot cleaner than that of a septic tank.
In short the sewage treatment plant processes contaminants from wastewater and household sewage.
Its objective is to produce an environmentally friendly and safe liquid discharge into the soil.
The end result is that the discharge of sewage effluent is up to 98% cleaner that raw sewage that is discharged from septic tanks.
Electrical and non electrical sewage treatment plants.
There are two types of sewage treatment plants. Electrical and none electrical.
The electrical sewage treatment plants generally have a compressor which pumps air into the sewage treatment plant, or turn a large drum which again puts air into the tank. The air (oxygen) aids digestion for the bacteria inside the sewage treatment plant.
The sewage treatment plant is also fitted to an isolation box or switch which will cut power to the sewage treatment plant should a problem arise with the electricity circuit.
Sewage Treatment Plants are installed for mainly two reasons.
1) As with each new septic tank and sewage treatment plant installation, a consent permit must be obtained from the Environmental Agency. For more information or advice on this please call us. If the tank you intend to install is going to be situated near to a water course i.e a stream, well or ditch then the Environment Agency will insist a sewage treatment plant is installed.
2) The other reason is that people are generally becoming more aware and protective of their environment. A sewage treatment plant is a great step forward in reducing your carbon footprint and protecting the environment.
The Soakaway
As for the liquid that enters the sewage treatment plant it is discharged in the soil by means of a soakaway drainfield.
Most sewage treatment plants in the United Kingdom are fitted with a soakaway or drainfield.
