A solution when there is no possibility of a soakaway.

A cesspool is a large container that usually lies buried underground.  All the waste discharged from a house or other property such as sink, toilet, bath waste e.t.c enters into this container.

Cesspool do not have soakaway drainage attached to it.

A solution when there is no possibility of a soakaway.  In some cases when the Environmental Agency will not grant a ‘consent to discharge’ certificate a cesspit must be installed.  Whilst this is a good alternative to a septic tank, the down side is that when they are full they need emptying.  The frequency on how often they need emptying is dependant on how much and how often sewage enters the tank.  For example some cesspits need emptying once a year, whilst others need emptying once a week.  Some house connect the rain water downpipes to their septic tanks and cesspits.  This obviously speeds up the time in which they get full.

Cesspits have been around for hundreds of years.

Up to the last 30 years they have usually been constructed of bricks, blocks and mortar.

Even disused wells have been converted into cesspits.
